The white-kneed tarantula, a member of the bombardier spider family, defends itself in the event of danger by throwing stinging hairs in the direction of its attacker. If these hairs get into the throat and eyes, they cause severe itching. They are found exclusively in the tropical rainforests of northern Brazil and feed on insects. The female spiders reach a body length of 9 cm and have intensely coloured body hair. The most striking feature of the white-kneed tarantula is, as its name suggests, the white-coloured rings on its joints.
