Tortoises can live up to 200 years. They feed mainly on plants, but also on snails, earthworms and insects. The special thing about tortoises is their shell. When they are afraid and sense danger, they retract their head and legs very quickly. A baby turtle is born with a shell, but it is much lighter in colour and not as hard. When the females are expecting offspring, they lay eggs and bury them under the soil from which they are hatched.
