The lion is a big cat. The males and females look very different. The male has a mane, the lioness has none. Lions live in an extended family in which the females and their babies form the majority. Duties are well distributed within the pride. The males protect and defend the females and their cubs. In return, the lioness goes hunting. If a lioness is expecting a baby, she retreats to a hiding place and stays there with the cubs for up to 8 weeks. Only then does she return to the pride. The lion cub is then suckled for up to 6 months by its own mother and by other lionesses who have just given birth.
