Like the kangaroo, the koala is probably one of the most famous representatives of the Australian fauna and is bursting with unusual features. The nocturnal tree dwellers are marsupial mammals similar to kangaroos, have water-repellent fur and two thumbs on each of their front feet with fingertips that have papillary ridges similar to those of humans. The koala spends most of the day sleeping and is almost only active for feeding and reproduction. With its large, sensitive nose, it can smell whether the eucalyptus leaves, on which it feeds almost exclusively, contain toxins or uses them to locate mother or young animals.
