Like emus, kangaroos are a heraldic animal of Australia. As they can only move forwards, they are regarded there as a symbol of progress. Probably the most characteristic feature of the marsupials are their much longer hind legs, on which they can move by jumping. This allows them to reach speeds of up to 50 km/h over short distances. Their distribution is limited to Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania. However, the herbivores are relatively adaptable in their choice of habitat, inhabiting tropical rainforests as well as bush and grasslands or dry steppe and desert regions.
