Guinea pigs originate from South America, where they colonise a wide variety of habitats. They are diurnal and live in underground burrows, some of which they dig themselves or simply take over from other animals as soon as they are empty. Guinea pigs live in communities and are pure herbivores. Guinea pigs have been kept as pets in Europe since the 16th century.
