The mammoth lived in the cold periods of the last 200,000 years. It had thick fur and was about 3.2 metres high at the shoulder. Frozen carcasses can still be found today in the permafrost of Siberia. The importance of the mammoth for man at that time is expressed in the numerous wall paintings and figurative representations. At the end of the Ice Age, around 10,000 years ago, the mammoth became extinct as a result of the changing habitat and global warming. Perhaps hunting by humans also played a role in this.
