The flamingos are an order of birds with only one family with intensely pink plumage. The edge of the beak has a lamellar structure which, together with the tongue, forms a filter apparatus with which flamingos can filter plankton from the water. The pink colouring of the plumage is also due to the food. The flamingo organism can metabolise plankton substances with the help of enzymes in the liver. This produces several pigments that are stored in the skin and feathers of adult flamingos. Standing upright, flamingos are 90 to 155 cm tall.
