The American Shorthair probably descends from the predecessors of today's British Shorthair, which were brought to North America by British settlers. It is a very athletic cat with a slender and powerful body. It is medium to large in size, strong and muscular, not too compact, but supple. The coat is short, dense, firm and shiny.
